The email landed in Rowan Wrap’s inbox at 9:14 a.m. “Please send the DCP”. He stared at it. The screening was the following evening, the cinema was booked, and all he had was an MP4. His stomach dropped. Cinemas don’t play those.

He uploaded everything: the ProRes master, the final mix, the subtitle files that he needed to be burned in i.e. (OCAP) not (CCAP) a separate text file. he sent his message to DCP-Solutions with fingers crossed: “Please can you turn my film into a DCP soon asap,” he typed in hope.

The team opened Rowan’s files and ran the check. Frame rate, resolution, aspect ratio, colour space, audio layout, each one examined and cleared within the hour. One flag popped up, a mismatch that would have killed the screening in the projection booth. It was caught and fixed before it could do any damage.

Then came the real race. The film was converted into cinema-standard JPEG 2000, the sound packaged, the subtitles embedded. Progress bars crept forward while the night deepened and the building emptied as everyone headed home.

At dawn, the package reached the screening room, and the real test began.

Lights down. A cinema-grade server hummed to life. Two sets of eyes watched every frame, checking picture, sync, audio and subtitles. Nothing left the building unwatched. That is our rule.

The film played clean. Every cue landed. Every line of dialogue matched the picture.

Meanwhile, Rowan paced his kitchen, refreshing his inbox. He’d sent the files, and he’d been told what it would cost for an express job before anyone touched them, so there were no surprises waiting. But the clock still ticked.

At 8:52, 22 hours after he’d first hit send, his phone buzzed.

“Your DCP is ready.”

A secure link arrived. The cinema accepted downloads, so no courier was needed. He forwarded it to the programmer.

“Received,” the cinema wrote back. “Ingesting now.”

Rowan exhaled for what felt like the first time in a day

That night, the lights dimmed in a full house. The projector flickered, the screen bloomed, and his film filled the dark, sharp and enormous room exactly as he’d imagined.

He watched from the back row, relieved, as the opening frame held. Phew.
