Hollywood directors Steven Soderbergh, James Cameron and Darren Aronofsky are, it has been reported, cautiously opening the door to AI. Soderbergh has spoken openly about using generative AI for dream-sequence imagery in a forthcoming John Lennon documentary and wants to use the tech for a Spanish-American war epic. It’s the same pragmatic spirit that once led him to shoot feature films on an iPhone. The real anxiety isn’t that a Soderbergh film will drown in AI; it’s that AI will lead to shortcuts which will reduce the craft of filmmaking.
