A KDM, or key delivery message, is a small encrypted file that acts like a digital key, unlocking your film so it can play on a specific cinema projector, at a specific venue, during a specific window of time.
That’s because your actual film file the DCP, or digital cinema package, is almost always encrypted to prevent unauthorised copying or playback. Think of the DCP as a safe and the KDM as the combination: without the right key, the screen stays dark, no matter how well your film was mastered. A KDM isn’t something the cinema creates or something you can generate yourself; it’s built by whoever encrypted the original DCP, using the exact server certificate, playback dates, and DCP details for that specific venue. Because every cinema server has a unique certificate, a KDM made for one screen won’t work on another, even for the same film on the same night.
Small errors in this process cause big problems. The most common mistakes include requesting a KDM too late, sending the wrong server certificate, getting playback dates wrong after a reschedule, forgetting the UUID of the DCP/CPL needs to matches the UUID referenced in the KDM If they don’t match the KDM won’t unlock the DCP even if the server certificate and dates are correct and assuming a finished DCP is automatically “ready to go,” and not confirming ingest with the cinema in advance. Any one of these can mean a black screen instead of a premiere.
