DCP is the only format built for the big screen, a structured, encrypted-ready package built for digital cinema projectors. Mix them up, or assume one substitutes for another, and you’re setting yourself up for a delivery crisis.
The confusion isn’t really about the formats, it’s about timing. At submission stage, festivals want H.264 (occasionally ProRes for a quality check). Once you’re accepted and screening theatrically, they then want a DCP built to their exact specs: resolution, aspect ratio, sound configuration, encryption. This is where filmmakers get caught out, assuming a polished ProRes export is “good to go,” only to discover days before their premiere that a compliant DCP still needs to be built, and that a rush job costs more and risks failure. And building one isn’t a simple export: correct colour space conversion, precise framing, accurate channel mapping, compliant wrapping, and QC playback all have to happen properly, or you risk a black screen or dead audio on premiere night. Or, worse case scenario, your screening is cancelled.
The takeaway: keep a ProRes master from your edit, use H.264 for submissions and promo, and budget real time, ideally with a professional mastering house for your DCP once a theatrical screening is confirmed.
